Close your kitchen for a day and let a mobile team take the strain
For independent pubs and hotels, hiring in a mobile caterer is a growing trend that customers love. For pubs it can be a great alternative when there are holidays planned for kitchen staff, or if you have deep clean, or repair operations planned in. The idea is you keep the customers coming in, and make a profit, with a bit of planned downtime for the kitchen. And for both pubs and hotels, a big summer event can be made special with an outside mobile food or drink offer and it can help manage the numbers without hiring in extra staff.
There’s a growing number of mobile food wagons doing great trade with independent pubs, supplying food cooked outside in the garden or car park and helping to cover when the kitchen is understaffed or closed. Many pubs book in a mobile service in on a regular basis to help keep the offer fresh and add something that may not be possible from the current kitchen set up. And the good news is, the quality of what is on offer is going up and up.
Mobile pizza trucks with a woodfired oven and a full range of supporting side dishes and plates and cutlery are available throughout the UK. Customers love the concept – and as long as you market it well, it’s a great way to bring in income for no outlay. But as food expectations rise ever upwards, so mobile suppliers are raising their game to meet demand.
We were particularly impressed by The Wild Oven. With woodfired pizzas at the heart of their original offer, they now also supply a broad range of canapés, charcuterie, cheese boards, authentic antipasti and tasty desserts – and it’s no longer just one van; they are expanding fast, with much demand from hotels for wedding breakfasts and corporate events.
And while it may sound counter-intuitive, there’s also a growing use of specialist mobile bars. At big events, when you know there will be a strain on the bar and the staff, sometimes it makes sense to hire a mobile bar. We have a long-standing relationship with The Little Gin Company, whose mobile bar with their own-brand gin is a great addition to outdoor events. Often hired in conjunction with with a mobile food firm, it’s a way of maximising profits and offering a special service for planned events.
